By plane: Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport is about an hour from the city center. Most major US and Canadian airlines serve the airport. There are several daily trans-Atlantic flights to major European cities. The STM Airport Express Bus will shuttle you down to the city from the airport 24/7.

What are the most popular destinations to visit in Montreal?

One hidden jewel on your must-see list in Montreal is Parc Des Rapides (Even a total newbie to the French language can translate that.) The pristine beauty of this nature preserve with it’s lush foliage with rare birds and brilliant flowers seems a world away from the big city, proving that Montreal is so much more than tall buildings, potholes and traffic.

“What rapids”, you ask? Why if you’ve studied Canadian history, you must know I’m talking about the majestic Lachine Rapids, the same ones the voyageurs had to negotiate on their arrival in ‘the new world’ over four hundred years ago. And they’ve little changed in their splendour over the years, still offering visitors a spectacular display of whitecaps, and challenging some of our most adept boaters.

But their history goes back far before that, the island having been inhabited by the Iroquois more than 1000 years ago. Today, it’s a home and sanctuary to various species of ducks and birds, including the blue heron.

What are the main cities to discover in Montreal?

Parc des Rapides encompasses a small island off the shore of Montreal Island at the bottom of the borough of LaSalle (South end of Bishop Power Street). Access to this small island is made possible by two dirt-filled walkways originally filled in from the remnants of sidewalks and various mills in the 1970’s.

But don’t let that fool you. Nature, with a little bit of help, has reclaimed this land and has earned it the right to be called a nature preserve.

Sportsmen will do well here too, for you’ll soon discover that the island is a fisherman’s Mecca (in certain specified areas). On the west side, fishermen cast off in the fast waters of the rapids which are particularly fast and menacing at the far end as the water circumvents the island from the first basin and joins the mains torrent.

The third basin accommodates slower waters, making for great angling stream where weekend fisherman can wade in the water and put their wits against salmon and trout.

It is recommended that one limit consumption of the fish, although the St. Lawrence has come a long way in terms of cleanliness.

But if you’re not up to eating the fish, there are two restaurants located right across the street from the park, one being more classy, the other providing traditional hot dogs and hamburgers as well as having an ice cream bar to delight connasseurs of all ages.
A very short drive west up LaSalle Boulevard the river, you’ll find a white-water rafting outfit for the more adventurous among you (I thought it was worth mentioning). Of maybe you’d prefer jet boating on the rapids…or a sea doo.

What Montreal is known for?

Let’s not forget the amphi theatre on the mainland that hosts regular musical events throughout the summer for all of Canada’s holiday weekends. Here you can enjoy refreshments while you sit outdoors and listen to local talent on the stage. At these events, there are security people on hand to help keep the peace, not that we have much trouble here.

The park is easily accessible by car, with parking available on the side streets near the intersection of LaSalle Boulevard and Bishop Power. Passing by the park is a long length of bike path running between the boroughs of Verdun, straight through LaSalle and Lachine, through to Dorval, giving cyclists easy access (A word of warning: despite the park`s name, it isn’t really in Lachine but at the bottom of LaSalle which, awhile back, was part of Lachine).

It’s also a brief bus ride from the city’s subway system, either the 58 from De leglise, or the 109 from Angrignon. So there’s no excuse to miss out on this scenic wonder.
