Wildlife Tourism

Wildlife- Inspiration to travel the world

Every year multitudes of people travel the world to watch and spot animals, and wildlife of all different kinds. There is so many different ways to travel, and I’m going to call it wildlife tourism. From the ocean’s creatures, to the forest’s if you are somewhere to see animals, to watch wildlife, to see Puffins, or watch Whales. That is Wildlife tourism.

Animal Highways

As a traveler, I think that the safety, conservation, and habitats of animals globally are coming as more and more of a concern. Many countries have started building paths for animals to cross major highways safely. These are just gaining ground in North America, especially in national parks such as Banff. These paths are I think a super cool idea, my family in Holland even says that they have video cameras on them, to help track how many animals are using them, and which types of wildlife as well. They cost in the millions of dollars to build generally, as they are basically building a habitat such as the forest over the highway, or road. Generally from the ones I have seen myself in Europe, they are wider than your typical vehicle, or bridge over a river. I guess that makes the wildlife feel comfortable crossing.

Sea Animals

People go Whale watching, or Puffin watching, or even Seal watching all over the world. Many places I have traveled to, such as Iceland, California, Cape Breton Island, Florida, there is many options to actually see these animals in the wild. I don’t want to go to Sea World (I’m not getting in on the debate about Sea World) and see them, as that is a fake environment. People flock to see these sea creatures, understandably. They are so majestic and beautiful and the way they move in the water.

Most of the time as well, if you do a Whale, or a Puffin tour, the company that takes you out will guarantee that you will see what you are out for. (Not always, but try to look for one that does.) I would highly suggest doing a tour like this. Generally the smaller tours are much better, with just a few people rather than a busload. I have personally been on boat tours all over the place and seen many different animals. It is always exciting and always proves to be worth it.

African Safari’s

African safaris are great (mind you I haven’t done one yet in Africa). It gets people out, in the wild, to see real wildlife, in their real habitats. Many you can do the choice of having more than one day on a safari too. Africa alone has a vast amount of the wildlife that we would generally go to see at the zoo. So why not take the trip to Africa instead? (I still love the zoo). People love these too though; anyone I have talked to who has done a safari has loved it.

Disney World, in the park Animal Kingdom, in Orlando also has their own Safari, where you can go on an actual safari in actual African looking trucks. I have been on this Safari, and I must say I loved it. They have tons of African animals at the park, and as far as I can read up on they actually do take care of them extremely well. Trying the best that they can to replicate the environment they come from. Which I think is pretty cool, considering not everybody is going to make it to Africa. One day I will however, that is a promise.

Just a note that if you are planning on doing the safari at Disney, go in the morning for more active animals.

Canada- (Really?)

I don’t really always think of my own Canada as a great place to go see wildlife. I know we have Squirrels, and deer, fishing, and hunting, but I never really thought of it as a place to go hiking and see wildlife. Apparently this was my mistake, as last year on a plane a German guy told me he would be extremely disappointed if he didn’t get to see a bear swatting a fish out of the stream in the wild. He was quite serious about it as well. Last year also I met a Swedish couple, who came to Cape Breton with a task of seeing moose. The latter seems like a much more realistic goal to me; however I did not crush the German’s dreams.

I have come to the conclusion though that Canada , as well as everywhere else has its own fair share of people traveling to spot the animals. This excites me as this is a very good reason to travel, so long as it is sustainable, and not actually hurting them.

Bird watching

To me, birds are beautiful; I love to see birds (not to touch). However I don’t think I would ever travel anywhere just for the sake of going to try to find popular birds. Albeit though I have a customer in landscaping who travels all over the world to watch and see birds. He loves them, tracks there seasons, and knows as much about them as he possible can. It seems unbelievable, he has seen and heard of birds that likely I will never even see or hear of.

All this being said, traveling to see the wildlife, is a great reason to travel. Animals are a beautiful part of the world and I believe that it is a wonderful reason to travel the world. I will say I believe in seeing them in their own natural habitat though, over zoos, and other option. Also if it is in zoos or other establishments that the animals are properly cared for. Do your research before giving your money away.
